May Long Weekend: The Unofficial Kickoff to Backpacking Season!

The May long weekend always feels like the true start of backpacking season in Canada, but spring hiking comes with its own set of challenges, so preparation is key.

While iconic trails like the West Coast Trail officially opened on May 1, and Newfoundland’s East Coast Trail doesn't have open and close dates, many popular backcountry trails and parks unlock their gates around the Victoria Day weekend.

Here are a few highlights:

  • Nova Scotia – Cape Chignecto Provincial Park opens May 16 at 8:30 AM

  • New Brunswick – Fundy Trail Parkway opens May 16 at 9:00 AM

Other spectacular destinations open later in the season:

  • Nepisiguit Mi’gmaq Trail (NB): Opens June 1

  • Long Range Mountains Backcountry (NL): Opens June 28 (I’ll be there this year - stay tuned!)

  • The Rocky Mountains (I'll be there too!): Opening dates are all over the place, some are open year-round, and there is still a mix of snowpack and spring wildflowers, which is beautiful but unpredictable. Always check avalanche and trail reports before heading out.

Spring Trail Tips:

  • Expect high water levels. Many rivers and stream crossings are still running fast with spring runoff. Be cautious near moving water and consider alternate routes if fording looks unsafe.

  • Watch your footing. Trails may be slick with mud, rain, or lingering snow. Trekking poles are your best friend this time of year.

  • Keep wildlife safety top of mind. Spring is an active time for wildlife - bears, moose, and coyotes are often on the move. Give animals space, keep food stored properly, and make noise when hiking through brushy or low-visibility areas.

This time of year is full of energy, movement, and renewal ... just like you. Whether you’re getting ready for your first backpacking trip or dreaming of bigger routes ahead, the trail is calling... and it’s almost ready.
